No drugs found in raid that injured two officers

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Two police officers are recovering from injuries they received during a drug raid Wednesday night. One officer was shot in his protective vest and another was struck by bullet fragments.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported the officer shot in the vest, a 6-year veteran of the police department, suffered only minor injuries and was released from the hospital after treatment.

The other officer, an 18-year veteran of the police department, was struck in the groin area by bullet fragments as he was trying to go into the home.

Patrick Lathan, 18, of Baton Rouge, is charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and illegal use of a weapon.

Capt. Ronald Norman with BRPD said the shooting happened in the 1300 block of North 36th Street around 9:30 p.m. He added the officer was hit when a shot was fired through the front door of the home.

Witnesses said they heard several bangs just before the gunshots.

"Two EMS was examining him when pulled his shirt up and after they did that, it was pretty much like he was okay," said Roland Lewis, a neighbor about the officer shot in the vest.

Both officers were taken to the hospital. The officer shot in the chest received only minor injuries, and the officer who was injured by bullet fragments was back at work Thursday.

Police said several other suspects in the home were detained, but were released.

Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department say no drugs were found during the raid. The investigation is ongoing.

Lathan's bond has been set at $110,000.
