MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The circumstances surrounding a Montgomery toddler's death are still under investigation.

Family, friends and many concerned residents in Montgomery gathered at Jerusalem Baptist Church Wednesday night for a prayer vigil to remember little Ashton Easterling.

He's the toddler who was found unresponsive in his home in the 1800 block of Crouson St. in the Highland Gardens neighborhood April 16. He later died at the hospital.

Police are awaiting autopsy results and a medical review.

Ashton's mother, Lucy Smith, says community support and prayers have helped her get out of a deep depression after learning of his son's death.

"I wasn't eating. I wasn't sleeping. I was just disgusted," Smith said.

Smith said Ashton and his twin brother, Ameri, sustained injuries in the home under an adult's care while they were away.

"I just want them to find out what happened to my baby," Smith said.

Ashton would have been 2 years old Wednesday.

Ameri is celebrating the birthday without his twin, but his parents say it brings them comfort to see the spitting image of Ashton everyday through Ameri.

Ashton will be laid to rest Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ross Clayton Chapel.
