BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The city of Baton Rouge could soon be getting just a little bit bigger thanks to a petition signed by Celtic Media Centre and Costco Wholesale.

"This is something that's been in the works for a long time for us," said Celtic Executive Director of Studio Operations Patrick Mulhearn.

Celtic, soon to be open Costco Wholesale and the SAIF Credit Union have teamed up to petition to Baton Rouge to move from unincorporated St. George and annexed into city limits. The petition will be considered at next week's metro council meeting.

"Everybody along Celtic drive will now be within the city of Baton Rouge and you know that just makes it easy. You know from a marketing perspective, from a business perspective, from a taxation standpoint it just streamlines and clarifies everything," added Mulhearn.

Mulhearn added the idea of joining Baton Rouge was in the works long before the push to make St. George a city came to light, something that any business or property owner has the right to do.

"If you were abutting the city property if you wanted to become part of the city you've always had the right to petition to join the city of Baton Rouge," said Baton Rouge Metro-Councilman John Delgado.

The petition to join Baton Rouge involves Celtic and its neighbors in this area between Airline Highway and Bluebonnet Boulevard but more surprising is the news that Baton Rouge General and the Mall of Louisiana have been in talks with Baton Rouge officials about joining the city as well. That information came from Councilman Ryan Heck who represents the district housing both the mall and Baton Rouge General.  Heck told WAFB by phone Thursday he has not spoken with representatives from either entity but is certain the two have been in contact with the city about the issue. Heck adds he needs to learn exactly how losing the tax dollars could affect the existing St. George fire department but Delgado, who opposes the city of St. George, believes this is a sign of what is to come.

"I think a lot of people are going to say we just aren't going to take the risks with our property taxes, we're not going to take a risk at whether we are going to get fire and police protection, we're going to go with people we know and they are going to join city of Baton Rouge rather than take the risk of the unknown potential city of St. George," said Delgado.

Mulhearn adds knowing exactly where it stands is why Celtic Media, which advertises globally, decided to join Baton Rouge.

"It would be extremely confusing if we were in two different cities. So, being in Baton Rouge, everybody knows where Baton Rouge is and so we're happy to say we are a Baton Rouge studio," said Mulhearn.

The issue will go before the Metro-Council next Wednesday.
