KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are trying to figure out what led to a shooting that left a father dead and left his young son paralyzed.

Police responded to a shooting call on 4501 Cleveland Ave. at 10 p.m. Friday. Police showed up to find 34-year-old K.C. Curry dead in the front seat of his car.

His 10-year-old son in the passenger's seat had also been shot and was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in serious condition. A 5-year-old sitting in the backseat was not hurt. The boys were spending the day with their father.

Two bullets hit Ka Vyea Tyson Curry leaving him paralyzed. The shooting has left the boy's family praying that God will get them through the difficult situation.

"God's hand is on this situation. We may not understand the details and why ... because we're a family of faith. God's hand is in it," Ka Vyea's uncle, T. Darnell Tyson, said.

Family said the father had stopped to fill up his car at the gas station when an unknown shooter started firing. People who live nearby say they heard several shots and saw a man running away on foot alongside a large SUV.

"We are just numb about it, you know, innocent kids get shot, and it's just terrible," said neighbor Mary Antonio.

According to police, the shooting was tough to deal with, especially after several high profile shootings over the past several weeks.

"It was definitely a long week, has been a long few weeks for us, but a good ending to them. This obviously out here tonight is not what we wanted and obviously if a 10-year-old's shot something like that, I have no idea how to explain how someone could think that was OK to do that," Capt. Tye Grant said.

Police are still searching for the shooter. Investigators released surveillance video showing the suspected gunman walking up to Curry's car.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
