Last year there were 81 related fire deaths in Alabama for the entire year. According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, there have already been 58 fire related deaths this year.

With the alarming rate of fire related deaths in Alabama, here are some simple fire safety tips to keep you safe:

-Have an escape plan in order to protect your family and make sure to practice it regularly.

-Check smoke detectors once a month and change the batteries at least once a year.

-Make sure to use electricity and electronic devices safely.

-If an appliance is smoking or is emitting an unusual smell, unplug it immediately and have it repaired.

-Replace any frayed or cracked cords on electronic appliances. Never tamper with the fuse box and make sure to never use an improper size fuse.
