ASU to end lease and close Fairview Farmer's Market

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University is announcing that it plans to close the Fairview Avenue farmers market that it has managed through the College of Business Administration since 2011.

Dr. Le-Quita Booth, dean of ASU's College of Business Administration released a statement announcing the closure:

"Alabama State University had a lease with the Farmer's Market on Fairview's owner, the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, but the University decided to close out its lease with the owner of the Market.

The University became involved with the Farmer's Market on Fairview in 2011 out of its long standing desire to reach out and help those within the Montgomery community. In the case of the FMF, we wished to do what we could in 2011 (when we heard that the Alabama Dept. of Agriculture and Industries was going to close it) to help keep it open so that Montgomery residents near the FMF would have easy access to purchase local and sustainable food, and to help support our local farmers who produce it.

With those desires in mind in 2011, Alabama State University took out a lease with the Alabama Dept. of Agriculture and Industries to both help the local community have easy access to purchase local and sustainable food products from Alabama farmers, as well as to provide an experience for our College of Business Administration students in the area of finance and marketing.

Because of ASU, the Farmer's Market on Fairview has remained open since 2011.

However, on March 21, ASU came to the conclusion that it would close out its lease with the owner of the Farmer's Market on Fairview, and communicated that to the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries - its owner."

The Montgomery Police Department operated a police substation in the market. It says it received notice from ASU in March that it was withdrawing from the facility and MPD vacated the substation on April 2.

MPD says it is looking for other space to relocated the substation.
