McKee Middle takes first place at SEMCE competition

Posted: Updated:

Students at McKee Middle School took first place, the second time in two years, in the Regional Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering's, science technology engineering and mathematics competition. On Thursday the students demonstrated their bottle rockets and robots.

Along with their teachers, the students competed against other students from 17 states across the region. There were a variety of divisions including robotics, rocket launching, trivia/scholars bowl and other engineering applications.

The purpose of this competition is to equip teachers and students with the resources needed to increase the number of minority students who are well-prepared to enter college, major in and ultimately pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Because the group placed first at the regional competition, they will advance to compete in the national SECME finals, which will be held on the campus of the University of Alabama Birmingham June 25-28, 2014.
