Baby giraffe makes debut at Metro Richmond Zoo

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

The Metro Richmond Zoo's baby giraffe went on display Friday morning.

Jessie, a 13-year-old female Reticulated giraffe, gave birth to her fourth calf this week in the African exhibit. The calf's father is named Tonka.

The giraffe was in labor for a little over two hours, according to Zoo Director, Jim Andelin.

The calf is 6' tall and weighs around 175 pounds, according to zoo officials.

In the past, Jessie has not taken care of her previous calves, and zoo staff has had to bottle raise them.

Miraculously, Jessie allowed her calf to nurse, and everything seems to be going well so far. The calf was born in front of numerous zoo visitors.

However, mom and baby were kept inside their shelter for a few days to allow more private time for bonding, according to Andelin.
