Chesterfield students may be reassigned because of overcrowding

There are about 13 classroom trailers at Chalkley Elementary School. It has the most in the county because the school is well over capacity. For months, school leaders have been working to fix this problem.

Shawn Smith with Chesterfield County Schools says the proposed solution, move 120 students from Chalkley to another school.

"Eight now they are one of our overcrowded school at 118 percent over capacity and move them to an adjacent school Jacobs road elementary, that is about 92 percent capacity," Shawn Smith said.

Yahya Ali has mixed feelings about the move. We caught up with him at work this afternoon. His daughter is a second grader and finishing her first year at Chalkley. He says the move would mean a longer commute to and from school .

"It would be twice in a year that she has had to move to another school and then it is an inconvenience and they have to all settle into a new school," Ali said.

At the beginning of the school year, 891 students were reported in attendance at Chalkley Elementary. The school has a capacity of 745 students. Smith says parents have been very vocal about the reassignments for several months now.

"We had a number of community meetings we sent letters to families that will be impacted and had a very positive response, the school board held a public forum," Smith said.

If the board approves the move...there are still details that will have to be worked out, like transportation. Ali says he is not sure if his daughter will have to make the move yet.

"I don't think she's going to like it. she really didn't want to go to this one," Ali said.

The Chesterfield County School board is expected to vote on the reassignment on May 13.
