NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Dozens of friends, fans and family came to the Woodlawn Cemetery Saturday to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Grammy award-winning country musician, George Jones. Gathered around a podium, they shared fond memories and prayers for Jones' family.

State legislators also presented a resolution to honor Jones' music and work. "I'm proud to tell you that every member of the General Assembly signed on to this resolution to honor and commend George Jones for all that he has done not only for country music but for Tennessee and the United States," said Jack Johnson, R-Franklin.

Jones' widow, Nancy, planted two dogwood trees at the He Stopped Loving Her Today monument. She said the day was bittersweet. "Today is the most important day, I think, of my life and for the fans to celebrate George's life," she said. "I went through the grieving and have been grieving, and right now it is time to celebrate because we all know George is in heaven. That's what he worked really hard for," she continued.

Jones announced that the George Jones Scholarship Fund at Middle Tennessee State University has raised more than $171,000. Donations can be made at online at www.MTSU.edu/give or by mail at George Jones Scholarship Fund, MTSU, Office of Development, Box 109, Murfreesboro, TN 37132.
