Fashion show dares teens to dream

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Dare Dreamer is a relatively new, non-profit organization, that specializes in mentoring teen girls between 12 and 19 years old.

They needed money so they decided to hold a fashion show Saturday at Arkansas State University. The girls they take care of were eager to be a part of this event.

"When I was young I didn't have anybody to look out for me," said Darika Harris. "To tell me what was right and what was wrong, when I shouldn't be doing something, and so that made me want to get in girl's lives."

Darika Harris is 21 years old and although the girls are way younger than her she told Region 8 News she loved putting makeup on them as much as being their mentor.

Dr. Brenda Randle teaches at Arkansas State University and is the co-founder of Dare Dreamer. She said they chose the name Dare Dreamer because they wanted to dare girls to dream and go after that dream.

It's a great concept to put behind a fashion show.

"Most women, most girls, love the opportunity to put on makeup and get their hair done, to go out and look pretty. Just be a princess for a day and it's just amazing to see the smiles on their faces," said Dr. Randle.

Kenisha Ross said she bought a ticket to the event because she had a niece modeling in the fashion show and said after missing it last year, she had to show up today.

"I just felt like we needed to support her and she would know that her family is behind her 110%," said Ross. "That is why we are here, to support her and woo her on and tell her she can do whatever she puts her mind to."

Carlee Holmes is a member of Dare Dreamer and said that she knew from the start of hair and makeup that she would enjoy the event.

After they received a huge turnout, the show was deemed a success. Holmes said the support from the audience made the night so much more exciting.

"It helped my self confidence and presenting all this stuff to people as a group. It brought us together more," said Holmes. "It made me smile that they were clapping for me. I think girls in the community should join."

Dr. Randle told Region 8 News that the money raised was going to help fund a special trip for the members in their sophomore and junior years. They hope to let them visit colleges the students may be interested.

She said that if you were not able to attend the event but want to donate or learn more about the Dare Dreamers, you can go to their website at www.iamadaredreamer.com.
