MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Many people are looking to help storm victims after tornadoes tore through Arkansas and Mississippi Sunday and Monday.

Rescuers say there is a specific way to give so that you don't hinder the rescue process.

The Red Cross says financial donations are most effective because they buy relief supplies close to disaster sites. It helps to avoid delays and transportation costs in getting basic necessities delivered to disaster victims.

"A lot of times people do want to ship things or take goods. A lot of times that builds into the chaos that's already part of a disaster relief operation," explained Kim Cribb, Mid-South Red Cross.

Cribb says Red Cross streamlines the rescue process.

"The best thing you can do is give and you can do that online. You can text to 'Red Cross' at 90999 to give a one-time $10 donation or you can go to RedCross.org," she added.

The Red Cross has partnerships with rescue groups across the country who know exactly what people devastated by disasters need.

"We go in and do disaster assessment to see what areas have been the harder a hit, what needs they do have," said Cribb.

Another thing you can do is train with the Red Cross to volunteer.

"Ninety-six percent of what we do is made up from volunteer work," she said.

The Red Cross has seven mobile apps to help you prepare, ride out a storm, and handle the aftermath. For more information about those apps, click here: http://www.redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps.
