SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Emergency responders gathered at the South Deerfield Fire Department on Monday to learn about Narcan, a drug is used on patients who overdose on heroin and other opiates.

Heroin use in western Massachusetts has become a crisis, according to law enforcement and medical personnel.

Northwest District Attorney David Sullivan noted more than 40 people in Franklin County had overdosed in the past 15 months. He said the number was a marked increase.

Monday's training brought about 70 people from more than 40 communities in the Pioneer Valley. Those attending the class would be certified to teach others in their community to administer Narcan.

Responders familiar with the drug said the process was very simple to teach others.
