CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

One of the Richmond Metro Zoo's five cheetah cubs passed away on Sunday, according to a statement issued late Monday night.

Zoo staff stated Hanna had been acting normally on Saturday, but was then found dead in her overnight shelter on Sunday morning. A necropsy was performed and tissue and other samples have been sent to a lab for testing.

A zoo spokesperson also indicated there was no evidence of trauma or rough play from Hanna's litter mates.

The following statement was issued by the Richmond Metro Zoo:

"It is with heavy heart and great sadness we report that Hanna, one of our 5 cheetah cubs, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 4, 2014. She was playing and acting normal on Saturday. She was found dead by zoo staff in her overnight shelter Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon, our vet performed a necropsy (animal autopsy) on her; Hanna had gained weight and was in very good body condition. Tissue and other samples have been sent to a lab, and we are waiting for the results. There was no evidence of trauma or rough play from litter mates. It does not appear to be anything contagious that would affect the other cubs. It is not related to her foot injury she sustained last month. Lana and the other cubs were upset on Sunday, but were doing much better today. The Zoo staff is devastated by this loss. Hanna will be greatly missed. She touched the lives of thousands of people around the world."
