(WMC-TV) – A mother and her daughter were both injured when the house they were staying in caught fire on the 4500 block of Jamerson Avenue, near Berclair Road, Tuesday morning.

Memphis Fire Department responded to the fire around 9:30 a.m. The battalion chief said it appears that the mother went back into the burning home to help get her daughter to safety.

Kelly Price says her best friend's daughter has special needs and uses a wheelchair. When her friend ran in to save her daughter, Price said she followed.

"She ran in and I ran in behind her, and I couldn't breathe," said Price. "I got a rock and busted the window, and I go to go back in and she's like, in the middle of the hall. I can't breathe, I go back out."

The mother and daughter are recovering at the hospital from burns they received in the fire. The extent of their injuries is not known.

Neighbors looked on with concern on Tuesday; Price said those neighbors played a big role in the rescue.

"The little girl next door told us there was a fire," said Price, who said she heard popping sounds.

Fire investigators say it appears that the fire started from the side of the house.
