LEXINGTON, KY (WAVE) - A stepson of a Lexington police officer is facing charges after he took his stepdad's police cruiser on a joyride and led police on a high speed chase early.

Kentucky State Police said the juvenile stole the car from his home in Lexington and headed toward Louisville. Just after 5 a.m., Louisville Metro Police spotted the Lexington police car near the Gene Snyder Freeway with its lights and siren on, but couldn't catch up with it.

Because LMPD was able to provide an identification number of the car Lexington police determined it was assigned to Officer Earl Rayford. When two officers went to Rayford home, the found the patrol car was missing, along with Rayford's stepson.

At 5:56 a.m., as the police car headed back east on Interstate 64 into Shelby County, it was met by KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers at the 31 mile marker just outside Shelbyville. When officers activated their emergency equipment to pull the car over, it would not stop and sped off with officers in pursuit.

After reaching speeds of 125 miles per hour, CVE officers ended the pursuit by using a spike strip to stop the car at exit 53 in Franklin County.

The boy, along with two female passengers, was taken into custody.

No one was hurt.
