Spring Fling offers primer for Parklands project

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - You'd think any little boy or girl would know what to do in a fountain. Or dirt. But maybe nature isn't second nature for them these days.

"My husband and I grew up in the country, so for us, we had this in our backyard," Lake Forest resident Stephanie Lanham said Saturday. "But for the kids, this is a really neat experience for them to check out the creek, the fishing and all these kinds of things."

After all, who has a backyard quite like the 1,800 acres now open, in the soon-to-be 4,000-acre Parklands of Floyds Fork?

"If you added up all of the Olmstead Parks-the Cherokee, the Seneca the Iroquois into it, they are about half the size of our total park," director Scott Martin told WAVE 3 News. "We have seven miles of the Louisville Loop Park that is now opening for running and cycling"

Ready on time, Martin said, and on budget, which developers guesstimate could top $50 million when finished in late 2015. The operating costs: $4.5 million per year.

Saturday's Spring Fling was an opportunity to buy-in, financially and philosophically.

"We're building it, and they're coming," Martin said. "We're on track for 800,000 visits. But having this, doesn't necessarily mean they know how to use it."

Yearly memberships are $30 per adult, or $50 per household.

"Spend some money, you'll find more reasons to use it more often," Martin said. "Since Derby Day, we've had canoes and kayaks available. You can come out here and fly-fish."

Lanham's family lives only minutes away. "We ride bikes as a family now and just have such a great place to go and explores the creeks and paths and trails," she said. "So it's a lot of fun. It will definitely be a success."
