SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) -

Two people are recovering at New Hanover Medical Regional Center after being airlifted by the Coast Guard from a cruise ship Sunday morning.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard officials, the Coast Guard medevaced a 25-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from a cruise ship approximately 135 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The Coast Guard 5th District Command Center was notified about two sick individuals aboard the Carnival Splendor at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The ship was approximately 410 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras.

Fifth District watch standers asked the Carnival Splendor alter its course toward North Carolina, so a Coast Guard helicopter would be close enough to remove the sick passengers.

Early Sunday morning, crews boarded an MH-60 Jawhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City.

The crew arrived on scene at 5:45 a.m., hoisted two people into the helicopter and took the patients to NHRMC. Officials said the patients are in stable condition.
