There were some tense moments for an East Texas couple when they run away from their truck as a train slammed into it.

Christina Bates and her fiance were crossing the railroad tracks on County Road 3422 near the intersection of Highway 80 in Harrison County when their white pickup truck stalled. It was around 1:15 p.m. on Monday.

We spoke with the passenger in the pickup just a half hour after it happened.

Toby Dillard was riding in a truck he had just purchased, and his fiancée Kristina Bates was driving. He said the truck got off the blacktop. A trooper with the Department of Public Safety said there was evidence that Bates was trying to get the truck back on the road.

"The truck died, it wouldn't move so we jumped out. We grabbed our little dog and jumped out," Dillard said.

He said they saw the train coming, but the truck just wouldn't move.

"Try to get the truck, the truck ain't going. We just bought it. Get out and run! I don't know what else would be going through your mind. We didn't want to die," Dillard added.

They all got out safely, including their little dog "Soupy." Kristina was visibly shaken by the collision, but didn't want to go to the hospital.

"I've been in a lot of car wrecks, but I've never been hit by a train. They say nothing stops a train and I don't reckon it does," Dillard stated.

Nothing but the train's driver and that takes some time and distance. The train, by the way, sustained no damage.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, one of the truck's tires had left the roadway and had crossed onto the railroad tracks, causing the tire to become stuck. Kristina Bates was issued two citations: one for no insurance, and one for stop, stand and park which states you cannot be stopped in an active roadway.
