GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Several Upstate hospitals, the airport and other emergency officials will participate in a national disaster drill Wednesday, using a fake earthquake as the catalyst.

The exercise is using a 7.2-magnitude earthquake along the new Madrid fault line as the prompt to the training, according to a spokesperson for Greenville Health System.

Participating agencies are preparing as if there are several hundred square miles impacted by the quake, resulting in 1,400 fatalities, 18,000 hospitalizations, destruction of 300 homes and 250,000 people seeking shelter, GHS said.

For the drill, the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) is activating the Columbia FCC and Upstate hospitals to prepare to receive patients.

GHS said the drill will have patients begin arriving at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport at 10 a.m. as part of the exercise to be transported to the hospital by 11 a.m.

Military combat camera teams will bring the "patients" being triaged and treated to Greenville Memorial Hospital and some will be made up to look like they have realistic injuries, GHS said.
