Police: Hollywood missing person case connected to Bluffton murder

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has named a suspect in the investigation into the disappearance of a Hollywood, SC woman.

The suspect, Jerry Lee Manigault, 54, was arrested in Beaufort County and is being held at the Sheriff Cannon Detention Center on unrelated charges.

The CCSO and U.S. Marshall Fugitive Task Force arrested him for having an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to re-register as a sex offender.

Police said there is sufficient evidence that indicates Julia Mugett's disappearance was caused by foul play.

Mudgett, 77, went missing on May 4, but SSCO recovered the vehicle belonging to her on Monday. The car was located near a boat landing at Tuten Landing in Jasper County.

While working with detectives from the Bluffton Police Department, both agencies believe that there is a link between the Mudgett investigation and their homicide investigation involving Polly Ann Mitchell.

Mitchell was found dead in her Buck Island Road home on Monday.

"It's real hard to know that somebody would come in her house and disrespect her like she was trash or something," said Mitchell's granddaughter Monique Bryant. "Basically someone broke into her house, beat her to death, stripped her clothes off and then raped her and tore up her house. When I spoke to detectives earlier, they let us know all the information."

Mitchell's death has been ruled a homicide, but police are not confirming the details of her death to the media.

They have not linked Manigault to her death, but while investigators search for evidence that might connect him, Bryant is patiently waiting for jusitice.

"I just can't believe somebody would have the audacity to do that to her," she said. "It's hard to take in."
