LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - All westbound lanes of the Watterson Expressway were closed approaching Poplar Level Road after a driver went airborne and landed on the interstate.

The road is back open at this time.

According to Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. Friday.

A woman was driving at a high rate of speed southbound on Poplar Level Road when she lost control, hit an embankment and went airborne, Smiley said.

Police reported the woman was ejected from the car. Her vehicle landed on I-264 in the westbound lanes, where it struck another car. She was transported to University Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the other car, a man, was taken to Norton Audubon Hospital for observation.

Both drivers were the only occupants in the cars, according to police. Their identities have not been released.

We have a crew on the scene and will bring you the latest on this breaking news as we gather more information.
