Tangle Tamer

Does It Work Wednesday

If tears and tantrums go hand-in-hand with combing your daughters hair, it may be time to try the Tangle Tamer.

The $9 Tangle Tamer claims to make detangling faster and easier than ever. The plastic teeth spin, supposedly helping you glide through tangles. But at first glance it looks a little weird.

"Like a kitchen gadget, ha ha ha!" laughs Amy Canady. The Jackson woman has two active girls who tend to get lots of tangles, so she's eager to help us test the Tangle Tamer. "Place the Tangle Tamer in the hair just below your hand, and ease it through the hair using short strokes," she reads directions. "Come here, Maddie," she corrals her daughter to comb the hair.

Four-year-old Maddie is curious, but cautious at the same time. And for good reason! Her fine hair tangles easily, and there's just no easy way to get around it. Not even with the Tangle Tamer. "Ow!"Maddie grabs at her head. "Does that hurt?" Amy asks. "Yes!"

The Tangle Tamer should glide easily through wet or dry hair, so do not try to force it. If you come across a difficult tangle, simply take the Tangle Tamer out of the hair and start again. Amy quickly decides a regular comb or pick would be easier to work with. It's difficult to focus the big teeth of the Tangle Tamer on a small knot. "It did go through that tangle," she says. "It got the tangle out. But it took quite a few brushes to get through it."

Okay, Maddie's hair is tangle free, so is she ready to go shopping?

"No!" Amy laughingly shakes her head. "We would brush it better, to make it look nice."

A regular brush or fine-toothed comb gives a "finished" and smooth look that you cannot get from the Tangle Tamer. Next Amy's first-grader, Hailey, gets a turn. You can see a day on the playground causes some tangles.

"Does that hurt?"Amy asks Haily the same thing. "Yea!" she says, wincing.

"I think it's grabbing big sections of hair instead of getting the tangles," Amy summarizes.

Hailey says it feels like it's pulling her hair... It's loud... And it vibrates against her head. She says she likes a plain brush better.

A plain brush looks better, too. So we give the $9 Tangle Tamer a disappointing D.
