WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA (KCBS/KCAL/CNN) - Two victims' fathers spoke out after the deadly rampage in California on Friday.

Bob Weiss is still in shock over the death of his daughter, who was shot and killed outside the Alpha Phi Sorority house.

Despite his grief, Weiss feels compassion for the assailant's parents.

"I can imagine what his parents went through trying to raise a child with mental illness like he had," he said. "I feel for them, and I feel for Rodger."

The gunman, Elliot Rodger, killed six people before apparently taking his own life.

Richard Martinez, the father of Christopher Martinez, who died in the shooting, is enraged.

"He's our only child," he said. "And he died on Friday. I'm 61 years old now. I'll never have another child. He's gone. The reason I'm doing this right now is to try to see if we can do anything to make my son's death mean something. Because that's all we've got."

"I think he had the capacity to be much more than we were," Martinez said. "He was articulate, determined, nice and tough."

He was also angry about all the media focus on the perpetrator.

"If there's all these things in the media about the shooter and nothing about the victims, it sends the wrong message," he said. "People need to understand that real people died here. They need to know, put faces, names, histories to the people who died, to make it real to them, that it could be them, because if you start talking about the people who died, then they're real."
