LOS ANGELES (CNN) - Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has agreed to buy the Los Angeles Clippers, reports say.

The $2 billion deal would be a record for the NBA if approved by the league.

The sale was negotiated by Shelly Sterling, estranged wife of embattled team owner Donald Sterling, who also would have to OK the deal.

He came under fire following the disclosure of a tape recording that included racist remarks.

The NBA is in the process of terminating the Sterlings' ownership in the team.
