BOSTON (WHDH/Beford Police Department/CNN) – Investigators are trying to determine what caused a private jet crash that killed seven people in Massachusetts.

The plan ran off the runway Saturday night and burst into flames on takeoff from Hanscom Field, northwest of Boston.

A driver called 911 after seeing smoke in some nearby woods.

Operator: "911 (inaudible) what's your emergency?"

Man: "I think there was an airplane crash."

Operator: "Okay. Where do you think it was?"

Man: "You know. Let me see if I can figure out what road I'm on. I'm not that familiar with the neighborhood. Uh - It's near Hanscom."

Operator: "Near Hanscom?"

Man: "Yup."

Operator: "Okay. What's your name sir?"

Man: "My names Mike Stevens...the back highway to Hanscom."

Man: "There's a giant column with smoke and planes."

Operator: "Yup. We do have officers heading that way right now. Alright. Thanks for the call."

Man: "Yup."

The victims include Lewis Katz, co-owner of a media company that owns the Philadelphia Inquirer. The 72-year-old was also the former owner of the New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils.

The Boston Globe reports Katz and three other passengers were returning from a nonprofit fundraiser. Three crew members were also killed.

The National Transportation Safety board is investigating.
