VAN BUREN COUNTY, AR (KTHV/CNN) - Two construction workers died and 10 others were hospitalized on Monday after an accident involving a log truck.

Officials say the truck turned over in a construction zone.

"It was a bad accident; it was really bad," Van Buren County Sheriff Scott Bradley said. "I just feel bad for the ones who lost their lives today, and the others who have severe injuries."

Bradley said he has never worked an accident with so many victims in one location.

At about 3:15 p.m., a logging truck lost its brakes and came barreling down a hill out of control, slamming into a bridge with 30 to 40 construction workers on it.

"When it hit that bridge, the logs went flying off the bridge, off the truck into the bridge," Bradley said. "We had workers on that bridge doing construction; they're sitting on top of that bridge, working. The truck slides into them. The logs started striking the workers."

More than 20 of those workers suffered injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to major broken legs.

Bradley jumped in along with others trying to help the wounded.

"When I arrived at the scene, there were several people down," he said. "Some were pinned underneath the logs; others had broken legs, and they were laying in different places on the bridge."

One person was killed on the bridge. Another died later. Ten were taken to various hospitals; three of them airlifted.

State police, along with the sheriff's department and Clinton police were investigating the accident. As of Monday evening, no citations had been issued.
