INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Police announced Saturday that a woman was arrested in Cass County on suspicion of the murder of her husband.

Independence police said they arrested Kirstin A. Stephens in Cass County on Friday. Prosecutors charged her with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

She was wanted for the March 7 murder of 65-year-old Charles E. Stephens.

Stephens was found murdered inside his home in the 800 block of South Jones Road, located just north of Truman Road. Police were called there after Kirstin Stephens said she came home about 7 p.m. and found her husband dead inside.

Court documents said Charles Stephens had suffered several apparent gunshot wounds. A subsequent search of the home uncovered the murder weapon, a rifle, hidden under a whirlpool-style tub. DNA testing of the rifle discovered only Kirstin Stephens' DNA profile.

Police said in their report that Kirstin Stephens admitted she was having an affair and that the couple was in "financial distress." Witnesses gave statements that the she had commented that her husband "was worth more to her...‘dead than alive.'"

Court documents also said that Kirstin Stephens' explanation of her whereabouts during the time in which her husband was killed were discredited by video surveillance at those locations.

Back when they first heard the news, neighbors were shocked. Many have known each other for more than 40 years. One neighbor said the wife ran next door, frantic over the shocking discovery.

KCTV5 went back to the neighborhood after hearing news of the arrest. One neighbor said off camera that they are simply stunned by the turn of events.

Police said Kirstin Stephens will be arraigned Monday in the Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.

Anyone with any additional information on the murder is encouraged to contact the Investigations Unit at 816-325-7330.
