MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Wine in Tennessee grocery stores may be months away from possibly going on sale, but one retailer is already selling bottles.

Whole Foods in East Memphis found the loophole; the store started selling wine two months ago. In fact, they started selling wine even before Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed the wine-in-grocery-stores bill.

The loophole is called "cork and carry."

Here is how it works: A restaurant like the Barbecue Shack, which recently opened at Whole Foods, sells bottles of wine that have been uncorked to customers. They just have to taste it and show a receipt for food or a restaurant purchase.

"I think it's a great idea. I'm all for loopholes. I know their barbecue in there is really, really good," said customer Mike Stovall.

Whole Foods' selection of wine does not rival a liquor store.

Brittany Brinkley from North Carolina is used to buying wine in grocery stores. She still likes the ease of just buying a bottle of wine, not the cork and carry way.

"I actually wanted a bottle of wine. I found that out. I don't think it's just too much trouble for me," she said.

Tennessee legislators approved wine sales in food stores like Kroger, Target, and Walmart if voters approve it in local referendums. The referendum vote comes if supporters get enough names on petitions in November. If it passes food stores will be able to sell wine in July 2016.
