(CNN) - Seventy-one percent of Americans say it's time to raise the federal minimum wage, according to a new CNN Money poll.

While 36 percent want an increase to $10.10 an hour, the rate President Obama has proposed, 19 percent would like to see a smaller increase, and 16 percent think it should be higher than $10.10.

The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour.

Several states and cities have taken matters into their own hands.

Last week, Seattle passed the highest minimum wage in the nation at $15 an hour.

Critics argue higher minimum wage laws cost jobs as employers scale back to save money.
