Woman double-billed by Medicare, Obamacare marketplace

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Williamson County woman says she was getting double-billed after signing up for medical insurance through the Affordable Care Act online marketplace.

When she turned 65 years old, Janet Shadoin become eligible for Medicare. But ending her coverage through the marketplace has been a frustrating odyssey.

She first called in March, three months before her birthday, to find out how to end her Obamacare coverage.

"I called marketplace back on the 15th of April," she said. "May 9th, I called marketplace again."

Shadoin said each call lasted about an hour, and at one point the worker said they were having computer issues.

The problem was that on June 1 she would have to start paying double premiums, including nearly $300 a month for her Blue Cross Blue Shield plan through the marketplace and her Medicare premium of $254 a month.

What's worse is she can't legally file a Blue Cross claim if she's on Medicare.

"I said, 'Surely you're not going to take my money for a policy I can't use,'" Shadoin said.

With so many people reaching Medicare age every day, she figures it shouldn't be so complicated.

"I don't think I'm the only person who has turned 65," Shadoin said.

Media reports from across the country show she's not the only enrollee who's ended up with double premiums because they couldn't stop their marketplace coverage.

Shadoin's problem began getting resolved after Channel 4 News called Blue Cross Blue Shield on her behalf.

Blue Cross set up a threeway call and convinced a marketplace employee to disenroll Shadoin.

"Magically, he was able to remove me from marketplace coverage," Shadoin said.

Now, she is fighting to get a $300 refund for the double premium she paid for the month of June.
