OSCEOLA, IN (WNDU/CNN) – At just 24 years old, Amanda Ezra was juggling a lot of responsibilities.

"[Her kids] was one of the first things that she would talk about when I first met her. She would always talk about her babies and how they were like just the light of her life," friend Taylor Esmont said.

The mother of three, Ezra was enrolled in college and working toward her dream of becoming a teacher. The dream would also mean a better life for her kids.

"Everything she did, she did for them," Esmont said.

But, friends say on Saturday night, Ezra needed a break. She headed out to party with friends, and never made it home.

Police said Kyle Papa, 23, was driving Ezra's van down a street when he went over the curb in a cul-de-sac.

At the same time, Ezra was leaning her head out the window because she was getting sick. Papa drove between a utility pole and the wire holding it up, causing Ezra's head to hit the wire.

"I lost a friend and she made a choice to have some fun, get a break from the kids and it turned out tragically," friend Aneea Adkins said. "It's not ever a good thing [and] that's not something somebody wants to wake up and hear."

Papa fled the scene, but was eventually caught by police. He denied being the driver in the crash and failed several field sobriety tests, eventually blowing twice the legal limit on a portable breathalyzer test.

"I think he deserved way more charges than he's gotten," Esmont said. "I believe he should be on death sentence because he took an innocent woman's life."

Papa faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

He was jailed on a $50,000 bond.

In the meantime, the family is trying to raise money to help cover the funeral costs for Ezra.
