Church sign takes aim at boat thief with Commandment

MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

A Union County church is taking aim at a thief that hit their church by reminding people of one of the Ten Commandments.

Officials at Mills Creek Baptist Church, in Monroe, posted a statement on the church sign "Thou Shall Not Steal - Please Return Our Boat."

A parishioner who works at the church says the boat was part of a display advertising their vacation bible school.

WBTV was told the boat was a 12-foot, flat-bottomed fishing boat that someone had borrowed from a friend.

The boat was set up in the front of the church's property with a big sail that said "SAIL TO GALILEE."

Church officials say the boat was stolen some time between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

WBTV has learned that church officials filed a police report but say if the boat is returned "all will be forgiven."
