The Murphysboro, Illinois Food Pantry hosted a Mini Food Fair on June 19.

The St. Louis Area food bank brought a semi truck loaded with nearly 12,000 pounds of assorted food items to the American Legion parking lot in Murphysboro.

150 to 200 cars lined up on Thursday morning to receive donations. People waited up to four hours to receive food.

Event organizer and President of the Murphysboro Food Pantry board of directors, Jane Williams, says that this is just one event and people need food every day.

"Some of these people eat once a day and some don't get that. So, anything, I don't care if it's two dollars or a pack of hot dogs -- It will help change the situation," Williams said.

For a Murphysboro resident, Alise Hines, the donations today mean the difference between her four children eating or not.

"It's helping us to eat ... The help today makes a difference. So, I know they don't go home and go to bed hungry," Hines said.

Any Jackson County resident who qualified on the USDA economic guidelines chart was eligible to receive food.

Volunteers helped pass out food to people who qualified, including a summer class of volleyball players from Murphysboro High School.

"We came to help unload the truck for the food pantry to give food to the people that need it," Kerry Flanigan said, she plays back row on the volleyball team.
