(CNN) – Hopefully Saturday is a good day, because it will be a long one.

Saturday marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

It occurs when the sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator, and marks the beginning of summer for the Northern Hemisphere.

The exact moment will be at 6:51 a.m. ET.

The opposite is happening in the southern half of the planet: the shortest day of the year and the onset of winter.
