NASA releases photo of phytoplankton bloom

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) – NASA has released satellite pictures of a dramatic display that lighted up part of the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month.

The photo shows a swirling, light colored portion of the ocean that is a huge phytoplankton bloom

Phytoplankton is a microscopic organism, but when conditions are just right, a sudden, explosive growth called a bloom happens.

Blooms can cover hundreds of square miles and last several weeks, even though individual phytoplankton only live a few days.
