COLUMBIA, SC (TheBigSpur.com) South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner's contract was extended for two years and he was approved for a $50,000 a year raise by the board of trustees Friday.

"I'm extremely grateful for the support, the faith and the confidence from Dr. (Harris) Pastides and the board of trustees," Tanner said. "As all of you know, I love being at this university and I had the greatest job in college baseball for many, many years and now I have the greatest job as the director of athletics across this country. I'm very humbled and very appreciative of the opportunity to get an extension and to support our coaches and student-athletes."

Tanner's new contract features a $725,000 a year salary and will go into effect on July 2, 2014 and run through June 30, 2019.

The board of trustees also approved the renewal of South Carolina's contract with Delta which will charter the Gamecocks' flights to four road football games this year.

Dylan Thompson threw for three touchdowns and No. 24 South Carolina's maligned defense stood strong on a fourth-quarter goal line stand to topple No. 6 Georgia 38-35 on Saturday night.
No. 24 South Carolina's defense showed it's not nearly as bad as it looked two weeks ago - and maybe that No. 6 Georgia isn't the runaway favorite in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.

Georgia can establish itself as a top-tier beast if it gets by South Carolina this weekend - and USC would drop to 0-2 in the league with a loss. Tennessee travels to Oklahoma, where Coach Bob Stoops doesn't believe the SEC is all-powerful.
