LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Friends and family could hear the clanking of medals as Team Kentucky got off their plane, returning from the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games Saturday.

"They made quite a ruckus coming through the airport, and we're so proud of them," said Trish Mazzoni, President and CEO of Special Olympics Kentucky.

The 38 athletes and 16 coaches that went to New Jersey were up against 3500 other competitors and brought home 36 medals, including 18 gold.

The opportunity to excel in athletics, Mazzoni said, often leads to improvement in the school, work and home lives of the competitors. "It's really an all-around transformation of their lives, and it all happens through sports."
