St. Louis cyclists rally after fatal hit-and-run

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis bicyclists are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater driver caution after the hit-and-run death of a 54-year-old Clayton pedaler.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ( ) reports that a small group of protesters gathered outside City Hall Monday with large cardboard signs that read, "No more dead cyclists."

The rally came after cyclist Rick Beard died when he was hit by a car Friday night. Police suspect the car, which was found abandoned one mile from the accident in north St. Louis, might have been drag racing.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said that video footage from a camera mounted on Beard's bicycle showed that he rolled through a stop sign just before the accident. Dotson added that the video doesn't indicate what caused the collision.
