DONETSK, UKRAINE (CBS) - Four members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) special monitoring mission were released by officials of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic in Ukraine early on Friday after a month of captivity.

The leader of the pro-Russia separatists who had been holding the observers said they had been freed unconditionally.

Two groups of OSCE monitors were kidnapped at the end of May.

The first group went missing in the Donetsk region on May 26, the second in the Luhansk region on May 29.

The Luhansk-based team has not yet been released, the OSCE said on its website.

Both groups have been deployed to Ukraine to monitor the security situation following Russia's annexation of Crimea and a pro-Russia separatist insurgency that has engulfed regions in eastern Ukraine.

The OSCE also said it still has monitors working on the ground in eastern Ukraine, however it has reduced their number due to "the highly volatile situation."
