GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in the Chicago-area's Kane County say three people escaped serious injury when two vehicles traveled into a sinkhole on a rural stretch of road.
County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler says severe storms that swept through the region late Monday and early Tuesday were suspected of causing the sinkhole that measured some 10 feet in diameter.
Gengler says a 41-year-old Elgin woman and her 15-year-old son were riding in a Ford Taurus when they apparently drove into the hole shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday, trapping them.
A pickup truck followed suit a short time later.
Gengler says the car's occupants were taken to a hospital with slight injuries, while the pickup truck's driver was treated at the scene.
