KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A driver fleeing police has died after the suspect drove the wrong way on Interstate 29 and crashed into an innocent motorist.

The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the suspect as Justin V. Burkholder, 35, of Kansas City.

Burkholder had a felony probation violation warrant out of Wyandotte County and three failure to appear warrants out of North Kansas City. He also had a suspended Missouri driver's license.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office said they were trying to stop Burkholder about 2 p.m. Wednesday near the Kansas City International Airport. The truck had been reported stolen from south Platte County and there were stolen guns inside the vehicle, authorities said.

He was traveling the wrong way on I-29 when he struck a southbound SUV. The two vehicles wound up about 100 yards apart on I-29 near the Platte River.

Benjamin Shively, 38, of Overland Park was driving a 2014 Chevy Suburban. He was extricated from the SUV and rushed via ambulance to an area hospital. He suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized. Family and friends said he faces a long recovery, but is expected to make it.

Burkholder was taken from the vehicle, laid down on the highway and covered with a white blanket. A medical helicopter came to the scene to transport him, but they decided it wasn't needed.

Drivers posted on KCTV5's Facebook page about seeing the scary moments when Burkholder was fleeing police with numerous vehicles chasing him. He apparently went the wrong way on an exit ramp to enter I-29 and even drove through a restaurant parking lot at one point during the chase.

Some estimated that speeds reached 100 mph. The chase, which went through Platte and Clay counties, lasted about 40 minutes.

The chase traveled into Clay County near Liberty. The driver turned around and went west on Highway 152 into Platte County, authorities said.

Kansas City police said they used their helicopter to assist deputies in the pursuit. The Missouri Highway Patrol also assisted and is helping investigate the crash.

Burkholder had numerous brushes with the law. He had his first guilty plea in 2005 including a felony theft chase. His driver license was revoked in 2007 for failure to pay child support.

In 2008, he was sentenced to three years in prison for credit card fraud and stealing a motor vehicle. In 2011, he was sentenced to three years in prison for tampering with a motor vehicle.

He was wanted on a felony probation warrant out of Wyandotte County and three failure-to-appear warrants.

Deputies said they felt it was imperative to try to stop Burkholder.

"It evolved very quickly," Capt. Erik Holland of the Platte County Sheriff's Office said about the pursuit.
