OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A reportedly disgruntled former groundskeeper was shot in the arm after exchanging gunfire with police Thursday.

The standoff began Thursday afternoon and ended shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Anthony Muñoz lives in the Metcalf 56 Apartments, located at 56th Street and Metcalf Avenue. He said he knew the former groundskeeper because they parked next to each other and heard the man's gripes ever since he was fired a month ago, gripes he says that grew more hostile when the man learned he was also being evicted.

Muñoz says police surrounded the apartment for at least an hour and a half before firing on the man inside.

"After the four shots they fired, he fired one back with his pistol. He was pointing a gun at the police, fired back one at them, then we heard him say, 'Ow, I'm shot.' And they were like, 'Drop the gun,'" Muñoz said.

Police said they were called to the apartment at 3:40 p.m. by someone close to the man, asking for police to check on his welfare. They haven't said yet what exactly sparked the standoff, but Muñoz said the man had been getting into fights a lot lately with staff and residents.

"It's kind of sad but you shouldn't be pointing a gun at police. He could have just went willfully and this all would have been behind him. Now he's got a whole lot more to face," Muñoz said.

Police say the man was shot in the arm and should be OK. No officers were shot.
