The Big Bang at Longview Lake to benefit homeless veterans

JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

One of the biggest fireworks shows in the Midwest is in Jackson County.

It's called The Big Bang for a reason. Jackson County will be shooting off monster fireworks.

The fireworks that will be shot off at Longview Lake Friday night are more than twice the size of normal ones used in shows. The use of 10-inch shells means a more vibrant display of fireworks that shoot off higher and larger plumes of light.

Besides the light show there will be skydivers and live music. Jackson County said it's all done to honor the men and women who've safeguarded America's freedom.

A special video salute will showcase local World War II veterans.

It's free to get in, but the public is encouraged to bring an item donation to help homeless veterans.

"Any particular night you have 1,800 homeless veterans just in Kansas City alone, so what we are doing tonight is we are taking donations, we will have a number of receptacles all throughout the park. We don't want cash, can't take cash, but anything from toothpaste to deodorant, to just basic essentials like that, put them in there and we are going to raise that for homeless veterans to help us with the issue of homeless veterans in the Kansas City Area," said Mike Sanders, the Jackson County executive.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Those who want to come can enter Longview Lake at shelter No. 13.

Leave your coolers, grills and pets at home. They will not be allowed in for security reasons.

The fireworks start at 9:40 p.m.
