(CNN) - Comedian Joan Rivers is stirring up controversy for what she said in a joke about the first family.

Rivers was asked by a photographer whether she thought the U.S. would ever see a gay or female president.

In typical Rivers fashion she said, "We already have it with Obama."

She also said “You know Michelle is a trans," - meaning the first lady is transgendered.

Rivers went on to say she thought the remark about Mrs. Obama was a "compliment" because she said, "The most gorgeous women are transgender.”

The 81-year-old comedian's latest dust-up coincides with the release of her new book Diary of a Mad Diva.
