OWENSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A family in Owensville says their dogs saved them from the fire that destroyed their home.

Caroline Hale says she fell asleep on her living room couch Sunday night but not long after she got a very unusual wakeup call, "The dog started jumping on my chest. Sy did."

Sy, a dalmatian great dane mix, knew something was wrong and started barking.

"I thought somebody was at the door but then I started smelling smoke," said Caroline.

The Hale's two other dogs started barking as well.

Caroline says once she realized what was going on, she ran to wake up her dad, "He got up and said get outside and then he called the police."

Steve Hale says he has no idea how the fire started at his home on North Third Street but it spread throughout the house.

Now Steve, Caroline and their three dogs are staying at a friends cabin in Hazelton.

Steve Hale tells us he's simply thankful that God, his daughter and all of their dogs have given him the opportunity to rebuild.
