Homeowner, worker file police reports on contractor

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A homeowner says thousands of dollars in construction work is left unfinished while a worker claims he hasn't been paid.

Both of them are blaming the same contractor, and they've taken their concerns to police.

"He's a monster," skilled concrete worker Chris Guthrie said. "I trusted the man, and he's cost me a lot. I've got a baby on the way, and I can't get a three-bedroom house because I'm out of work and out of tools."

His most recent job left as scattered bricks and boards, Guthrie claimed he's been scammed by Mike Leffingwell and his Murfreesboro business, Got Concrete.

"Anybody that sees this man needs to stay away from him," Guthrie said. "They need to contact police or the Better Business Bureau."

The Murfreesboro homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, said she came to Leffingwell through an ad on Craigslist and paid him $6,000 to do additions to her two homes.

Guthrie said he also came into contact with Leffingwell through Craigslist and began working for that homeowner until he realized Leffingwell wasn't paying him for the work and his tools were missing.

"He took a drill, a saw and a circular saw," Guthrie said. "Those are valued at $500, and he took my tool belt besides that."

Both Guthrie and the homeowner have filed reports with Murfreesboro police.

In response, Leffingwell told Channel 4 by phone that he and the homeowner had already agreed to a refund Monday night, something the homeowner denies.

Leffingwell also claimed it was Guthrie who stole his tools.

The homeowner told Channel 4, after hearing of this story, Leffingwell called her and offered to give her that refund just as long as she didn't do an interview.

Guthrie said he got a similar call from Leffingwell, offering to return his tools and pay as much as he could for the work just as long as he stayed quiet about his allegations.

"We've got to come together and put a stop to this man because he's taking people's money who are working hard like myself," Guthrie said. "He's just going to take your money, and you're not going to get the job done."

According to the Better Business Bureau, two complaints were made against Leffingwell's Got Concrete in June alone for unfinished work. Got Concrete is not BBB accredited. Leffingwell claimed most contractors have many complaints on file.

BBB officials said they're in the process of investigating the complaints against Got Concrete.
