OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR/CNN) - The name alone is questionable - the vampire facial or blood facial.

"Some people think it's gory, I think it's catchy," Natausha Spears of Injectable Aesthetics in Oklahoma City said.

What is it? It's a facial using a patients own blood platelets to help heal tissue and regenerate cells.

First a numbing cream in applied, then, blood is drawn and put through a machine that separates red and white blood cells from the platelets, turning it into a yellowish color.

Now comes the skin pin.

"It's electric and has about 10 or 12 little needles that come out of it all at once," Spears said.

In vertical and horizontal passes, the skin pin causes pinpoint bleeding, allowing the plasma rich platelets, or PRP, to seep into the skin.

It takes about four weeks without anti-inflammatory drugs for the platelets to sit on the skin and multiply, then comes the benefits.

"You can see a reduction in brown spots, reduction in pore size, overall skin brightness, and skin health is better after PRP," Spears said.

The results are something to look forward to after a day or so of redness.

"It's not that I want to look like I'm in my 20s or even in my 40s, it's just that I want to feel and be the best that I can be," patient Kim Caldwell said.

The price for youth is pretty steep - the facial costs about $600.
