Royals rally for 5-2 win over Tigers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eric Hosmer's RBI double capped a five-run seventh inning and Kansas City avoided a four-game sweep on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Four of the runs were charged to Justin Verlander, who started the inning with a two-hit shutout but loaded the bases on three straight singles.
The come-from-behind win still leaves the second-place Royals 6½ games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.
Since June 18 when K.C. beat the Tigers for their 10th straight win and went a season-best seven games over .500, the Royals have gone 9-14 while the Tigers went 17-6.
Verlander gave up six hits in 6 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked one.
Yordano Ventura pitched 1 2/3 innings in his first career relief appearance and got the win.
Herrera, Brewers snap 7-game skid, rout Cardinals
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Elian Herrera got five hits while filling in for mourning shortstop Jean Segura, and the Milwaukee Brewers ended a seven-game losing streak by routing the St. Louis Cardinals 11-2 Sunday.
The Brewers tied a season high with 19 hits and took a one-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central at the All-Star break.
Herrera was called up from the minors Saturday when Segura was put on the bereavement list after the death of his 9-month-old son. Segura returned home to the Dominican Republic.
Herrera went 5 for 5 with a double and scored three runs.
Wily Peralta tossed seven strong innings for the win. A frustrated Carlos Martinez allowed four runs in four innings.
Cards' Wainwright could pitch in All-Star game
MILWAUKEE (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright could pitch in Tuesday's All-Star game despite going seven innings in Saturday's win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Manager Mike Matheny, who will lead the National League, said the right-hander told him before Sunday's game against Milwaukee that he felt good and could go at the All-Star game at Target Field.
Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA. Tuesday would be his scheduled day to throw in between starts. Matheny said Wainwright hasn't done much lobbying to pitch.
Matheny is making his first appearance as an All-Star manager. He said he expects his players to compete like their "postseason is on the line."
The Cardinals were trying to finish a three-game sweep Sunday in Milwaukee.
SEC MEDIA DAYS
NCAA, QBs shift among topics at SEC media days
(AP) - There's plenty of issues to discuss in the Southeastern Conference.
The league opens its annual media days on Monday with radical change in the college athletic model appearing imminent and the SEC Network soon to take the airwaves. A fourth day has been added to the event in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, and the SEC has issued about 1,100 media credentials.
Florida State ended the SEC's seven-year run of national titles by beating Auburn in January. Six of the league's teams will have new starting quarterbacks with the exodus of star power at the position including Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Alabama's AJ McCarron and Georgia's Aaron Murray.
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive opens SEC media days then Auburn's Gus Malzahn will take the podium.
