MTSU student robbed at gunpoint inside Murfreesboro home

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

It sounds like something you only see on TV or in the movies, but for one woman, it was very real. She woke up in the middle of the night to find a man armed with a gun in her room. He was a total stranger and was burglarizing the home.

Victim Jade Lehman, who was just staying the night at her boyfriend's Yearwood Avenue home, made a frantic 911 call for help shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.

"I was sleeping and there was just a guy with a gun in the room," Lehman told the 911 operator.

It was a terrifying ordeal for the MTSU student.

The suspect forced his way into a back door and got into the house through another door that was unlocked.

Lehman's boyfriend, Nick Mina, was at work, but his two roommates and their girlfriends were all asleep in the house.

"She felt, sensed someone sneaking around a little bit, and she woke up in a daze. She kind of sat up and he put a gun in her face and said, 'Don't move. Shut up,'" Mina said.

The crook got away with a laptop and the victim's purse.

There was an all-out search for the suspect, who dressed in all black with a black gun and had a black bandanna over his face.

Authorities say he ran through a field into the Rutherford Boulevard parking lot on the MTSU campus, across from Greek Row, to make his getaway.

A campus-wide alert was issued for students.

"It's got to be scary whenever someone kicks in your door and you're asleep and breaks into your house," said Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold.

Neighbors in this usually quiet neighborhood are now on edge.

"I hope it doesn't happen again to anybody," said next-door neighbor Brittany Stacey. "We got kids and stuff and I was just kind of worried about that."

The victim recently returned from studying abroad. She says everything she owned was inside that purse. Now she says she has to start over with nothing.

"She's going to be broke for a minute, but at least she's not shot," Mina said.

The suspect also rummaged through a car in the driveway but took nothing.

Mina said it was probably a good idea he wasn't home.

"I'm glad it didn't end up worse like, I wished I was there, but who knows, I would have tried to be the hero and got one of the shots," Mina said.

A sheriff's office bloodhound tracked the suspect onto the MTSU campus but lost his scent on Greenland Avenue.

Authorities believe he may have gotten into a vehicle and took off.

Detectives are still trying to figure out if there were actually two robbers.

Murfreesboro police and MTSU police are also assisting with the investigation.
